About Mark

We he left school, Mark wanted to be an architect and went to a technical college to learn about building. He soon realised that there was more to construction than building houses and transferred to a civil engineering course when he was just 17. Mark joined Costain in 2006 as project director and has worked on significant bids and projects including London Bridge, the electrification of the West Coast Main line and the A14.

On how his role contributes to improving people’s lives

“We are always conscious of the impact a project can have on the communities it touches and try to encourage schools to visit the project so pupils can see the range of careers and skills that are available on a construction project. It’s also good to give something back to the communities we are working in and building local footpaths and putting up festive lights and trees at Christmas are some examples. At times, our projects do require road closures, so we work together to try and avoid peak times and events.”

The biggest challenge for project management professionals

Mark says embracing change and staying ahead of the curve is key! In a digital age where ‘rapid engineering’ techniques and offsite manufacturing are gaining momentum, expectations are changing. He believes challenging the norm will bring success.
