Creating Collaborative Solutions: Costain Climate Change Strategy

Creating Collaborative Solutions: Costain Climate Change Strategy

Author: Claire Baker

Over the last few years Costain has made a commitment to address Climate Change within all levels of our operations and to work with our partners, customers and other stakeholders to ensure we are operating sustainably and collaboratively finding solutions for the future. This commitment falls under our Costain Cares, Corporate Responsibility Strategy and has led to the launch of Costain’s Climate Change Strategy.

Costain showcased its newly launched Climate Change Strategy at our Engineering Tomorrow Innovation evening on 24th September. The evening saw a mixture of our customers, partners and associates joining us to celebrate innovation within Costain. The launch of our Climate Change Strategy is well-timed with the global climate change agenda as the latest report (WGI AR5) from the IPCC, the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change was launched at the end of September and is receiving great interest from Scientists, politicians and various stakeholders.

Costain’s vision is to be the leading provider of low-carbon solutions whilst also setting an exemplary standard of how a company should manage and reduce its greenhouse gas emissions and those of its customers.

Within our strategy we are focusing on three key areas of Adaptation, Mitigation and Supporting & Enabling. We believe if we work collaboratively with our employees, customers, partners and the public we can help develop and provide sustainable solutions that assist in these three areas.

We are also looking to HALF our emissions, setting an ambitious target:

“To reduce our measured emissions, achieving a 55% reduction in emission intensity by 2020 against our 2009 baseline.”

As you will see in a previous blog we have, over the last three years, reduced our carbon emissions by 27% and achieved external accreditation to CEMARS (Certified Emissions Measurement and Reduction Scheme). We continue to strive for reductions and new solutions in order to become a more sustainable business and help the UK move towards a low carbon future.

Over the next year we will be continuing to develop the Costain Climate Change Strategy with an extensive action plan. As part of this process we are looking for your views and to gather your input into this development. Please feedback on our Climate Change Strategy and what you would like to see in the future.
