National Grid London Power Tunnels Costain Skanska JV held an outdoor event for pupils in Camden to teach them about the importance of road safety.

An enormous heavy goods vehicle (HGV) was driven into the school’s playground, with a National Grid instructor providing 10-11 year olds with practical demonstrations and guidance of how to stay safe on the roads.

During the session, schoolchildren were given the opportunity to sit in the drivers’ seat, giving them a full appreciation of drivers’ visibility and the “dos and don’ts” of walking home after school.

London Power Tunnels enjoys a close relationship with Our Lady’s Catholic Primary School, which is situated next door to one of the key sites of the Costain Skanska JV project. The road safety session was part of a collaborative effort to help pupils stay safe when navigating the roads during the dark winter months.

Moya Richardson, Associate Headteacher at Our Lady’s School, said:

“This was a valuable learning experience for our pupils on the issue of road safety, which is of paramount importance to us. The practical demonstrations were a great way of helping them to remember to stay safe – it was wonderful for children to be able to sit in an HGV and gain a full appreciation of the importance of keeping aware at all times. Our thanks go to National Grid for organising such a fantastic and useful session.”

Alun Robinson, Lead Project Manager for the London Power Tunnels project, said:

“Road safety is a hugely important issue to National Grid. We are always keen to enhance the safety of the communities in which we work, and Our Lady’s School have been brilliant partners over the years. We hope that the pupils found the session as fun and engaging as we did.”

The London Power Tunnels project involves the construction of 32km of tunnels which will house electricity cables that will help keep Londoners plugged into safe and reliable power supplies. The project is due to be complete and operational by 2018.
