Major Handover At Paddington

Major Handover At Paddington

26 August 2015

C336 Paddington New Yard, a Costain led project, handed over a substantial part of the Westbourne Park worksite to C610 Systemwide main works recently.

The project started construction at the site in April 2014, with four phased handovers of the site from C300 Western Tunnels, the last of which was in February 2015.

In this time, the Paddington New Yard team has successfully completed the track formation area works, installed the southern section of a new elevated bus deck for the adjacent bus depot and constructed a replacement concrete batching plant. It has also had seven months’ worth of archaeological investigation on site, uncovering Brunel’s locomotive department workshops and stabling sheds (c1853 to 1907) at Westbourne Park.

This is the first phase of the handover to C610 Systemwide main works at Paddington New Yard and will allow it to establish the railhead and prepare for track installation from Westbourne Park by the end of November this year, one of Crossrail’s key milestones for 2015-2016. The second phase of the handover, for enabling access to the tunnels at Royal Oak Portal, will take place in September.

Matt Aston, Costain Project Director, said: “This is a fantastic achievement by the whole team following months of dedication and hard work. We have overcome significant challenges over the last year but ensured early communication and engagement with the C610 team to enable a smooth handover, paving the way for the Systemwide contracts to meet the objectives of the Crossrail programme.”
