A team of cyclists from four Costain projects in South Wales set off on a 400mile cycle challenge to Edinburgh, to raise funds towards the Ty Hafan Children’s Hospice Memorial Gardens project that commenced in August last year.

The Costain VINCI joint venture, which is developing proposals for the M4 corridor around Newport, has been supported by the Costain A465 section 2 project in Gilwern, the M4 Brynglas Tunnels project and the M4 J28 improvement scheme to raise money through the cycle challenge.

The 400 mile challenge that started at Cardiff Castle at 8.00am on 13 September marks an ongoing partnership with the charity as members of the team continue their work in designing and constructing a new state-of -the art garden at the Ty Hafan Hospice.

A group of 22 cyclists, plus six support drivers will pedal over 100 miles a day to reach Edinburgh Castle on Saturday 17 September. The team includes members from the Costain project partnerships and supply chain.
 
Since 1999, Ty Hafan has supported over 700 life-limited children and their families from across Wales. The hospice takes its support into families’ homes and is there to help families through extremely difficult times. It relies on the support of the public, its corporate sponsors and volunteers.

Brian Greaves, senior community relations manager for Costain VINCI said, “The project at Ty Hafan started just over a year ago and is making significant progress. Our aim from the cycle challenge to Edinburgh is to raise £10,000 and every member of the team has contributed towards the cost so that every penny will go to the charity. The event has been a challenge to organise but we are ready and looking forward to getting on the road.”

Barry Woodman, project director for the Costain VINCI Joint Venture added, “With the support of a number of our sub-contractors and supply chain we have recently completed the wheelchair race-track and work is continuing on a major boundary wall and viewing platform which we hope to complete this summer. In the spring, we will be commencing work on the memorial garden and an enchanted woodland with sensory features. As well as being an area in which to remember children who have sadly lost their lives at Ty Hafan, the new garden will feature therapeutic and social elements for families and hospice staff to enjoy.”

“The ongoing development of our gardens at the hospice will play a key role in supporting families, as it will provide a peaceful, beautiful space for thought and reflection for families, as well as an additional play area for children. By raising money for garden equipment and furniture through their cycle challenge, Costain Vinci will make a huge difference to the lives of children and their families, helping us to make sure a short life is a full life.”
